In today's episode on National Rural Health Day, I speak with two physicians with extensive experience providing patient care in rural environments. We talk about human trafficking, the opioid epidemic, rural healthcare access, and more.Hanni Stoklosa, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of HEAL Trafficking, is an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) with appointments at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. She is an internationally-recognized expert, advocate, researcher, and speaker on the wellbeing of trafficking survivors in the U.S. and internationally through a public health lens. She has advised the United Nations, International Organization for Migration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Department of State, and the National Academy of Medicine on issues of human trafficking and testified as an expert witness multiple times before the U.S. Congress. Eileen D. Barrett, M.D., MPH, SFHM, MACP, is Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians (ACP), representing internal medicine physicians, related sub specialists, and medical students. She is a rural internal medicine hospitalist and Faculty with IHI. Dr Barrett She completed a Rural Faculty Development Fellowship through the University of Arizona in 2009 and a Medical Justice and Advocacy Fellowship through Morehouse School of Medicine and the American Medical Association in 2022.

Previously, Ruthie and Mirtha joined me in episode 50, where we discussed the Netflix docuseries Lenox Hill. Ruthie Shatz is an award winning filmmaker. She and her husband Adi Barash are the founders of the Brooklyn based Yulari Films an award winning director - producer - writer team. Mirtha Macri is an emergency medicine physician. She trained at Mount Sinai St. Luke's Roosevelt in New York City, and currently works at Northwell Health. She is the quality director for the Lenox Health Greenwich Village hospital.

In today’s episode, I speak with Barbara Ross-Lee DO. She is an osteopathic family medicine physician, health policy expert, and overall trailblazer in the fields of medicine and health policy and medical education.  Dr. Ross-Lee is the first African American woman dean of a medical school and a health policy expert. She has played a pivotal role in breaking down barriers and reshaping the landscape of medical education. A graduate of Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine, she made history as the first African-American woman to lead a medical school in the United States. Her visionary leadership has been instrumental in promoting diversity in the healthcare workforce and addressing healthcare disparities. Dr. Ross-Lee's dedication to expanding access to quality healthcare and medical education has left an indelible mark on the industry, making her a respected and influential figure in the world of medicine.

In today's episode I speak with trauma surgeons Drs. Morad Hameed and Elliott Haut. With the announcement of President Biden's first-ever federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention, today's conversation is on point. We chat gun violence in the USA and Canada and discuss the Stop The Bleed campaign. Morad and Elliott speak on what they do to prevent burnout in themselves given that they are exposed to so much trauma themselves.The STOP THE BLEED® campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff, The White House. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters. Morad Hameed is a trauma surgeon and intensivist at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed medical school and surgical residency at the University of Alberta, graduate studies in public health at Harvard University, and fellowships in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Miami. Elliott Haut MD PhD is the Vice Chair of Quality, Safety, & Service, Department of Surgery, Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine and Editor in Chief at Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open.
